            Roland (Mac) McEldowney began taking
photographs at the age of 16 in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. His
early introduction to the outdoors instilled a love for adventure
and the natural world. Mac photographed African tribes in 1963 as a
Peace Corps geologist, and during his travels over a period of ten
years of work there, took photos in many parts of north, east and
west Africa. As a geologist working in the Western United States and
Mexico, he obtained photographs of indian ruins, unusual rock and
ice formations, and mountain and desert landscapes. He is currently
working in this area, with occasional trips back to Africa. He
started showing his work in 2000, and has exhibited and won awards
for his photographs in galleries and shows throughout Colorado. He
has an MS degree in geology from San Diego State University and is
listed in Who's Who in America. I have always been fascinated by the sculpted
rocks, clouds, water, trees and earth, and the forces that shape them.
The uses of these earth materials by ancient and modern tribes in
building houses, temples, storage bins and animal traps has long
captured my interest. The interplay of light, texture and design in
my black and white photographs, and the combination of color and
shape in my color photographs, bring a whole new level of awareness
to the natural forms. I have attempted to reflect these elusive
            qualities in this collection.

Red Rock Sculpture, Antelope Canyon, Page, Arizona, 2004
            Photo
Description: The water-worn rocks in Antelope Canyon are bathed in
red at midday as though someone had painted a sculpture. The slot
canyon, one of many in the area, has eroded through hundreds of feet
            of sandstone and shale.
