I am a visual archeologist. Visual Archaeology combines unrelated images to tell stories. My work explores the relationship between stucture and spirit, visible and invisible, fragments and whole, presence and absence. This series started with strong graphite drawings. The introduction of watercolor washes allowed me to excavate detail from abstraction like remains surface in an archaeological dig. Now I experiment with manipulation of layered grounds for added dimension and texture.
Archaeological digs frequently find remains of a structure or skeleton surrounded by objects and symbols of the spirit. My newer work places that structure and it’s symbols in space instead of laying them out for inspection. I hope to add a third dimension in the future by creating mobile sculptures that include drawing and objects.
